Mango and mangosteen are two different fruits. Why do I say so?  That is because Mango and mangosteen belong to two different species and have two different scientific names. Further, the Mango’s appearance, taste, and color are totally different at first glance from the mangosteen. Also, these fruits are native to two different geographical locations.

Would you like to know more about the Mango vs. mangosteen? You want to know the difference, right? That’s why you are here today. So, let us clarify your confusion.

Mongo Vs. Mangosteen

Most people misunderstand mango and mangosteen fruits are the same. This is like the confusion about apple and pineapple. Here also people are confused because of the common term or words in their names.

However, Mango and mangosteen are not names that use to recognize one fruit. They are two different fruits with unique characteristics. Simply, Mango and mangosteen do not have any relation.

Mangoes are coming from the genus Mangifera while mangosteen belongs to the genus Garcinia. When considering the outer color of these fruits, mangos are reddish-green and yellow in color. But mangosteen has a dark purple color outer cover.

Further mango size differs with the varieties, but they are not much large. Also, it has yellow-orange color pulp on the inside of the fruit. If you ever taste a mango, you know there is a large pit in the middle of the fruit.

But mangosteen is different from this. Mangosteen is relatively small in size. Also, there is a noticeable feature on the top of the fruit; it is a green cap. Mangosteen has white flesh. It is like citrus.

When they turn to their native places, both Mango and mangosteen grow in Asia but in very different areas. Mango is growing in India and Sri Lanka, basically. But mangosteen is native to Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

These are the major difference between Mango and mangosteen. So, let us know more about the Mango and mangosteen.

Taste of Mango vs. Mangosteen

If you try the taste of these two different fruits one by one, you can recognize a very sweet tropical taste. But it does not mean that two fruits have the same taste.

However, mango fruit is more fruity and also has a citrusy kind of flavor. After reading this, if you can try the taste of mango fruit, you will definitely remember the taste of peaches and pineapple because the taste of the Mango is similar to the combination of the flavor of the peaches and pineapples.

Further, over maturated or very ripe mango fruit has a hint of musk that is something included in the men’s perfumes. However, the sweetness of the Mango depends on how ripe it is.

Generally, mangosteen has both sweet flavor and sour. But it is complex. Actually, I believe mangosteen has the cross flavor of banana, lychees, pears, with strong citrus.

In a way, mangosteen is more delicious than Mango. Because it owns the different levels of the taste, but this will depend on your preference.

Appearance and color of Mango vs. Mangosteen

You can identify the difference between Mango and mangosteen from their color because they are totally different.

Anyhow, immature mango fruit is green in color, but some mango varieties become yellow when they mature. But some ripe mango varieties are green in color and red blush here and there.

However, the flesh of the Mango is yellow-orange in color. Mango has one seed, but it is large. The size of the seed is similar to half size of the fruit, and it is oval in shape and comes with white color.

When considering the shape of the Mango, it can be defined as a crescent with varying sizes. This shape is a unique feature of mangos. It may range from 10 to 15 cm.

On the other hand, mangosteen has a very different color; it is dark purple. When considering the pulp of the fruit, it is white.

Also, mangosteen has many seeds, and these seeds are not large like mangos. Relatively, mangosteen is small in size and has a round shape with a green cap on top of the fruit.

Its size can be guessed roughly about 5 to 7 cm in diameters. Also, mangosteen’s outer skin is thicker than the outer skin of the Mango.

Mango tree vs. Mangosteen tree

The mango tree has the ability to reach up about 130 feet in height. Generally, it is significantly taller than a mangosteen tree. This taller tree has eve- green leaves and pine shape flowers and flowers are faded yellow color.

Mango trees give fruits about 3 to 5 years after planting. But you should care about it well. If not, bearing fruit can be late. Comparatively, farmers cultivate a large number of fruits from mango trees than mangosteen.

However, the mango tree is more effective than mangosteen because you can easily grow, manage, and crop them.

When it comes to mangosteen trees, they can grow up to 20 to 80 feet. Also, it has greenish-yellow color leaves and about 1 to 2 inches wide beautiful flowers. This tree takes much time to grow and is also difficult to grow. Because the mangosteen plant has a very delicate root system.

Generally, if you want to mangosteen plants, you should live in an area with elevation, plenty of sunlight, and well-draining soil. However, the mangosteen tree gives fruits 10 to 20 years after planting them.

But if you care for them and treat them properly, there is a probability of bearing them before 10 years of age.

Nutrition content of Mango vs. of Mangosteen

Basically, Mango and mangosteen contain different amounts of valuable nutrition. When considering Mango, it is a pack of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and folate. Also, Mango has fibers. In addition to that, Mango contains around 100 to 120 calories.

When it turns to mangosteen, mainly it is the power plant of vitamin C. Thus, you can get more health benefits by eating mangosteen. Also, mangosteen has approximately 75 calories.

Generally, all species have a specific scientific name to distinguish them separately.  Similarly, Mango and mangosteen also have their own scientific names. The scientific name of the Mango is Mangifera indica, and mangosteen is recognized scientifically as Garcinia mangostana.

Mango is a member of Southeast countries, including India and Sri Lanka. Thus, Mango grows in the warm region because it prefers to tropical climate.

However, Mango is basically native to India, and they are the main exporter of mango fruit. Also, today Mango is growing in many countries across the tropical region due to being easier to grow.

The origin of the mangosteen is also Southeast Asia. But the origin country is still a secret. But some believe that the mangosteen came from Indonesia.

Basically, mangosteen is cultivated in South Asia countries, including Thailand, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.

However, mangosteen grows in several western countries such as Florida, Hawaii, California, and Puerto Rico. Generally, above mentioned western countries’ climates have pretty much resembled tropical climates.
