Banana is a delicious fruit with different color outer skins. It is rich in vitamin c, potassium, and other important nutrients. Generally, when bananas ripen this outer skin converts into a yellow, yellow mix light green color. But sometimes you can see the black spots on ripe bananas.

Keep reading to know more information about the black and brown spots of the bananas.

Is it ok to eat a banana with black spots?

The bananas that have black spots on the outer skin are safe to eat. Moreover, these black spots contain substances called Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF). This substance can fight against cancer cells. But if bananas have a black color middle texture, these are not safe to eat.

Generally, bananas’ outer skin is dark green and it converts to a yellow color when it is ripped. After a few days, there are black markings or spots appear on the fruit skin. These bananas are well ripped and rich in vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial substances.

Moreover, tumor necrosis factor can increase white blood cells and helps to increase the immunity system. Also, banana black spots contain antioxidant substances such as lentinan. It also helps to increase the immunity system against viruses and cancer cells. Further, ripe bananas are good for blood pressure, depression, aid digestion, and healthy bowel movement.

But when bananas’ skin completely turns black, these fruits are not suitable to eat. The total black color skin is the indication of rotten bananas. In this stage, the banana fruit texture is soft and mushy. Also rotten bananas start to smell.

Why do bananas have black spots inside?

Some bananas’ outer appearance is firm and normal. But if you watch it more accurately, there are some black color spots inside the fruit. There are two reasons for it. The first one is a black center syndrome and the second reason is mishandling.

During transportation, banana fruits can be damaged because of improper packaging and handling. As a result of these damages, bananas’ inner texture can be changed. Mostly this happens for half-ripen bananas. Because unripe bananas have a rough texture and do not easily damage during transportation.

The black center syndrome is a result of fungal infection. Usually, these black inner flesh are hard and crunchy. But you can remove these areas and enjoy the rest of the fruit. But if you eat black spots, surely you may experience vomiting or diarrhea.

However, this black center syndrome does not spread to the rest of the bananas. Therefore if other bananas do not have the above signs, you can remove rotten bananas and eat good ones.

Why do bananas have black spots outside?

Generally, bananas turn yellow when they are ripped. But when fruit overripe you can see some black color spots on the outer skin. Bananas contain some acids. When it ripens, these acid substances convert into sugar. Therefore it causes bruises. These bruises are the common sign of well-ripened bananas.

Further, the substance called tumor necrosis factor is contained in these black spots. It is beneficial for human health and the immunity system. These tumor necrosis factors have anti-cancer properties. Hence it can fight against cancer cells and prevents the growth of abnormal cells.

Moreover, it increases white blood cells and the immunity system too. Also, banana black spots contain antioxidant properties such as lentinan.

Can we eat brown spots on the banana?

The brown spots are the indicator of well-ripe bananas. Therefore you can eat these bananas. But sometimes the whole fruit will be covered with brown spots. These types of bananas have some bad flavors and smells. Therefore these overripe bananas cannot give a good mouthfeel. Thus, do not eat them.

Generally when bananas ripe their texture becomes more soft and juicy. In this stage, the cell walls of the banana fruits are damaged and oxidizing. It causes brown color spots on the fruit. Moreover, if you do not like brown spots, you can simply cut and remove them using a knife. Then you can enjoy the rest of the banana fruit.

But when it overripe and brown spots spread all over the fruits, some people do not like to eat these types of soft bananas. Also, it is a sign of spoliation.

Then, after a few days, the outer skin of the fruit completely changes from brown to black. Mostly in this stage bananas have a rotten flavor and sour odor. Furthermore, its texture is also more soft and juicy. Therefore bananas that have black-colored outer skin are not suitable for eating.

How to treat black spots in a banana?

Normally these black spots only appear on the outer skin of the bananas. Therefore you can easily peel the outer coat and eat the fruit. But sometimes there are some black spots on the inner fruit too. Also, these spots have a softened and brown color appearance.

However, you can easily cut and remove those areas using a knife. Then you eat and enjoy the rest of the fruit. But if the inner texture of the bananas is completely softened and rotten with brown color spots, do not eat these types of bananas.

To store fruits at home I use this wire basket. I think it is worth the price.

How to choose good bananas?

Banana skin is a major concern that helps to select a good banana. If you need to consume a fruit immediately, you can select yellow color bananas or yellow color bananas with black or brown outer skin. But to use bananas after a week or two, you should select unripe green bananas.

Further, you can increase your lifespan for several days by putting them in the refrigerator. But a cold environment can turn banana skin brown. However, the inner flesh is okay to eat. Also, you can wrap each banana using plastic wrap to increase shelf life. Further, vinegar or lime also can slow down the banana ripening process.

Finally, the banana is a king of the fruit family. It not only gives a good mouthfeel, but it also comprises package nutrition. Therefore to maintain a healthy and happy life, add these delicious fruits to your daily diet.

Conclusion

As I mentioned above don’t hesitate to buy bananas with black spots in several spots on the outer surface of the banana. Still, you can eat them. Because in most bananas outer black spots don’t affect the inner flesh. But if the outer covering turned completely into black color then don’t choose them they are the overripe ones. Select the best bananas and eat them. Also, don’t eat brown parts of the flesh their taste is not good at all.
