Blood Orange

Navel Orange

Based on the study is done by Archibald Dixon Shamel, Wilson Popenoe, and Palemon Dorsett in 1917, the Novel orange can be introduced as a single mutation that happened on the Selecta Orange tree in a monastery in Bahia, Brazil in the early 1800s. Now commercial novel orange grows in Brazil, Florida, California, and Arizona.

  2.Appearance 

Blood Orange 

Blood orange is a citrus fruit. This orange type is a bit smaller than other types of orange. It is similar to common orange from the outside. But if you look peel of the Blood orange, it is deep red color or crimson in color.

The main reason for this deep red color is anthocyanin. Firstly, this anthocyanin begins to develop in the edges of the peel of Blood Orange. Then it goes to the edges of segments.Finally, anthocyanin covers the flesh of the orange.

After finishing this process, you can see an orange with fully blood-colored streaks and lines. The degree of the color depends on the season, the time period when the oranges are harvested, and the variety.

When comparing other orange varieties, Blood Orange has thick and pitted skin. Blood orange has a low amount of seeds. And it has a very sweet flavor.

  

Navel Orange 

Navel Orange has a characteristic protrusion at one end of the orange. It looks like a human’s navel. Because of this reason, this orange type is named Navel Orange. Navel Orange is seedless. Also, you can peel it easily. This orange type is medium to large in size and orange in color. This orange has a spongy texture.

 

3.Taste 

Blood Orange

Blood orange can taste differently, it depends on what variety of Blood Orange that you used. But Blood orange is less tangy than other oranges. This orange type has tart and flavor more. But Blood Orange also has a sweet flavor.

Juice that prepared by using Blood Orange is delicious. But you have to drink or use this Blood Orange juice on the day you prepared it. Because this orange juice is a bit sweeter than classic orange juice and it quickly ferments.

Navel Orange 

Navel Orange is juicy and you can feel aromatic, sweet, and classic orange flavor from the Navel Orange. Moreover, this orange has a little bitter flavor than common orange types. Also, Navel Orange produces a low acidity level.

Blood Orange 

Blood Orange season starts in December and ends in April. Rest of the months of the year, it is difficult to find the Blood Orange. Also, Blood Oranges are more expensive than Navel and other orange types.

Navel Orange is a winter fruit. Its season is beginning in December and end up in March. The harvest is touching the peak in January and February.

Navel Orange 

Novel Orange also has the same amount of calories, carbs, and fibers mentioned above. Calories content is 70 calories per medium-sized Novel Orange. And also, this orange has 16 grams of carbs and 12 grams of sugar. Fiber content is 3 grams per medium-size Novel orange. Fiber helps to control cholesterol and it causes slow digestion.

The major difference between Blood Orange and the Novel Orange is anthocyanin. Blood Orange peel is dark red or crimson in color. The main reason for this coloration is anthocyanin. Therefore, you can easily recognize Blood Orange contains anthocyanin. Blueberry, sweet cherries also contain anthocyanin like Blood Orange.

Navel Orange 

  • Cara Cara Orange

This is a one of Novel Orange type. Cara Cara Orange is also known as Red Novel. This Navel orange type basically grows in Venezuela, South Africa, and San Joaquin Valley in California. This Navel Orange type is a hybrid of Washington Navel and Brazilian Bahia Navel. This Cara Cara orange developed in 1976 in Valencia, Venezuela. Red Novel has a sweet flavor. But when compared with other orange types, it has a low acidic level. Mainly this type is similar to Navel Orange. The main difference is, Red Novel has flesh that is pinkish-red in color.

You can find South African Cara Caras in the market in early August. Also, if you like Venezuelan orange, it is available in the market since October. Californian Navel Orange comes to the market in late November.
